Undercover cops/More crime incidents

Despite the arrest of several criminals, we continue to hear of crime incidents in District 6. The latest news involved 3 break-ins and a stolen car in the San Rafael area. A robbery with a flashed weapon was also reported in Linda Vista. This is in addition to several "hot-prowl" type crimes.

Yes--several people have been arrested (mainly in Southeast Pasadena as opposed to District 6 in SouthWEST Pasadena). Thank you PPD...but more needs to be done! It is simply unacceptable to have this level of crime incidents occuring.

Now.. the real question...We have been told by the Councilman that undercover police are patrolling on bicycle and foot and in unmarked cars. We have requested "proof" but no anwers yet. We hope that we are being told the truth but...past experience with District 6 governance makes us highly skeptical.

SHOW US THE PROOF!

Crime in District 6---A serious issue demanding answers

Crime continues to be a problem in District 6. Several weeks ago a meeting was held to address neighborhood concerns on the rising crime and burglary issues in District 6. Pointed questions were raised with generally defensive responses. (A 1972 study was cited claiming that increased visible police squad cars have no effect on crime?)

Almost daily we hear about a new incident at District 6 city of pasadena.com. The PPD advises all people to report ANYTHING/ANYONE that looks even the LEAST BIT suspicious to the PPD. Be sure and contact your Neighborhood Watch person to report any suspicious persons.

We also take tips here at District 6 City of Pasadena.com. (All tips are confidential--send to district6pasadena@gmail.com). We will continue to record all incidents to ensure transparency in District 6 issues including District 6 governance.

Oddly, there are not very many police squad cars in Pasadena--a growing urban city of at least 145,000 people. Given our growing population and growing urban commercial core, it is evident that a better job must be done in protecting the safety of District 6 residents. Be sure and ask your friends and neighbors on how this escalating issue can be addressed.

We will continue this topic in our next post within the next few days.

On guard,

LA Times Cites Pasadena Gang Violence on front page

By now, most people have no doubt seen the stunning front page LA Times article on Pasadena gang violence published last Saturday July 28, 2007. The article can be found here:

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-pasadena28jul28,1,7132013.story. Copy and paste in browser to view.

Behind the smoke and mirrors of the city of Roses lies a problematic issue that is every district's responsibility. While the police and community groups are to be congratulated for dealing with this situation, the silence coming from certain quarters of the city council is deafening. Where are our leaders pleading for this injustice to be addressed? How many more tragedies will it take until someone steps up to acknowledge and remedy this situation?
By now, we have all been contacted by friends in the Midwest and East coast who have seen the article on the Internet and are asking what has happened to the City of Roses? Sadly, we must tell them the truth--that behind the veneer of tranquility lies a a very troubled setting. Let us all raise our voices collectively no matter what district we reside in and plead that our leaders face reality and confront this situation head on.

Ave-64-Almost there

Well-it's been long, dry summer but finally it looks like "64" is almost done. The red light at La Loma/64 is still flashing red in all 4 directions suggesting that minor work is still being done. Many thanks to the City staff and Kalban construction for attacking a job that has been so long overdue.

4th of July and Freedom

Oh beautiful, for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea.

Oh beautiful, for patriot dream -------OUR FAVORITE VERSE!
That sees beyond the years,
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea!

We hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July in Pasadena. We wanted to say thank you to all the people who have served America to get us where we are today including the the readers of this blog. Our last posting has generated numerous comments (see below).

Freedom of Speech as denoted by the Bill of Rights allows us to publish this blog and is essential to an open society. We have heard the desperate stories of human rights abuses in China, in Darfur, and in other places in the world. In fact, the human rights abuses in China were just addressed at the Pasadena City Council meeting by a Pasadena resident of Chinese ancestry (see the video feed of the public comments section)

As the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states: "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas through any media regardless of frontiers."

With this guiding principle, the District 6 Pasadena blogger will continue to comment and report on the issues impacting District 6.

Cue...."America the Beautiful"...

Oh beautiful, for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea.

Oh beautiful, for pilgrims' feet
Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America! God mend thine ev'ry flaw;
Confirm thy soul in self control, thy liberty in law!

Oh beautiful, for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine,
'Til all success be nobleness, and ev'ry gain divine!

Oh beautiful, for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years,
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea!

Wireless Moratorium---Madison not present for vote

We don't mean to sound like the proverbial broken record but here we go again.......Ladies and gentlemen this is getting ridiculous.

Again, Mr. Madison was recorded as NOT PRESENT for the vote on the ordinance below.

(2) Adopt "AN INTERIM URGENCY ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF PASADENA TEMPORARILY PROHIBITING THE ISSUANCE OF PERMITS FOR THE PLACEMENT, CONSTRUCTION, AND MODIFICATION OF GROUND-MOUNTED COMMERCIAL WIRELESS FACILITIES IN RESIDENTIAL ZONING DISTRICTS" (Introduced by Councilmember Tyler)

We thank Vice-Mayor Haderlein who went above and beyond in speaking up and supporting this ordinance. Mr. Haderlein also rallied to fight the Cingular Wireless tower at 940 Ave. 64. (Yes-Ave 64 again....the cause célèbre of Pasadena now!) Ms. McAustin also spoke up in support of the moratorium. Thanks to Mr. Tyler for introducing this ordinance.

The council members voted "Yes" in favor of the moratorium (except for own Councilman Madison who had "signed off" by cell phone--yes cell phone!---and was no longer present at the meeting and did not cast a vote!) Mr. Madison was also not physically present in council chambers (AGAIN!)

How can a councilman represent us when he is not here in Pasadena during the meeting? This is becoming a joke now. (And to think he wants the Mayor job--heaven help us!)

WARNING: Be careful on Ave 64

Dear Readers:
We have received several emails expressing concern about traffic flow and dangerous incidents on Ave 64, La Loma, and Laguna Rd. There have been reports of "near misses" involving pedestrians and speeding cars. Also, at night the traffic lane markers are very difficult to read. We almost saw a head-on collision last night on Ave 64 just south of La Loma due to confusion about which lanes were open. Take it slow and don't use your cell phone or Blackberry until you are out of the area.

If you have any concerns about safety please let us know so we can alert the city and the Councilman. We accept "blind copies" and "forwards" on emails as well. All emails are kept confidential unless you express release permission. Send us your emails about anything having do with the city or district 6 to: district6pasadena@gmail.com. Emails will not be posted on the blog. If you want to leave a public comment, please continue to click on the "Comments" at the end of each post.
